An Enoura Maru Victim is finally Coming home
In December 1944, Army Maj. Harry C. Hoffmeyer was one of the prisoners crammed into the holds of the Oryoku Maru. He lived through the bombing at Subic Bay and was moved onto the Enoura Maru. He died on January 9, 1945, when that ship was attacked in Takao Harbor, Formosa. He was 51.
His remains were among 311 unknowns buried in Honolulu after the war. DPAA identified him through lab analysis and records research. On Saturday, October 24, he’ll be laid to rest with full military honors at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Oregon.
Every name that comes home matters, and every one is a reason to keep searching. If you’re in southern Oregon, please consider standing in for all of us.
Do you have a family member who was on the Oryoku, Enoura or Brazil Maru? I’d be honored if you shared their name.
