Overview
Edward G. DeLong commanded PT-31 during its final operation off the approaches to Subic Bay. His decisions in the early hours of 19 January 1942 shaped the survival of most of his crew.
PT-31 Incident
After the boat grounded, DeLong remained aboard to ensure its destruction, delaying his own escape. He later entered the water and successfully rejoined nine crewmen ashore near the Bataan Peninsula.
Wartime Fate
Commanding officer of PT-31; survived the boat’s loss, returned to further MTB-3 combat duty, was later captured while attempting escape in the Netherlands East Indies, and was executed by the Japanese at Manado on 2 July 1942
