Abel F. Ortega 1945 Pvt. Abel F. Ortega
promoted to Corporal after liberation 192nd Tank
Battalion Co. A- Command half-track driver for Capt. Walter H. Write He was taken prisoner by
the Japanese on April 9th, 1942. He was on the Bataan Death March,
Cabanatuan, Camp O’Donnell, Lipa Batangas, Camp Murphy and Bilibid Prison.
He was on the Hell Ship Hokusen Maru (a.k.a. Benjo Maru) and sent to Camp
Toroku in Formosa. He was put on
another Hell Ship which took him to Moji, Japan and onto Camp Wakinohama. He
was then transferred to Camp Maibara where he was liberated in September of
1945. After Liberation and while in the reserves, he was called up to fight in
Korea. He would receive The
Bronze Star, 3 Purple Hearts, Prisoner of War Medal, Good Conduct Medal w/2
Awards, American Defense Service Medal w/ Foreign Clasp, American Campaign
Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 2 Bronze Stars, World War II Victory
Medal, Army of Occupation Medal w/ Japan Clasp, National Defense Service
Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Defense Medal w/1
Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Philippine Independence Medal w/1
Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korean War Service
Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation w/2 Oak Leafs, Philippine Presidential
Unit Citation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantrymen Badge 1st
Award w/Wreath, 8 Overseas Bars, And 2 Service Stripes. He married Naomi Rodriguez
on December 29th, 1946. He had seven children with the last being
born in 1966. They are Deborah Johnson married to Gerald, Daniel R. Ortega
married to Evangelina, Ruth Johnson married to Charles, Susanna Taylor Married
to Keith, Priscilla Parker married to Keith, Abel Ortega Jr. married to Lorrie
and Diane Tritely married to Mark. Deborah
and Susanna live in Houston, Texas. Ruth lives in Brownwood, Texas. Daniel,
Abel Jr. Priscilla and Diane live in San Antonio, Texas. Abel and Naomi live
in Cibolo, Texas.
